Google, Golf, Grids, Grandsons and Great Grandfathers

Only this crazy Canuck would try to concoct a story based on 6 “G” words, so here goes:

Corbin, my nine-year old grandson, had a class assignment this past week. He was to choose a famous Canadian, research on the Internet and then write about them.

He could have chosen Alexander Graham Bell, or Wayne Gretzky, or Michael J. Fox but instead, he chose his “Papa.”

I guess in his eyes, I was somehow famous. Afterall, I have some websites and YouTube videos:-)

When he excitedly read his assignment over the phone, transmitted through the grid of phone lines that Alexander Graham Bell envisioned (Bell actually placed the world’s first phone call just a few miles from here in Paris, On), the warmest feeling started to overtake me. He had done a great job of Googling, picking up information from online interviews and reviews and even found my bio where he was careful not to plagiarize.

I was brought back in time to the special event that was held in honor of my late father, Percy J. Beneteau, and the eulogy I delivered in front of the large crowd that had assembled to celebrate the annual music scholarship his friends had instituted in his name in his hometown university.

As Corbin had honored me, so I honored my father, who passed four years before Corbin’s birth. If you’d like to read it, here is a pdf of the eulogy.

My father was an avid golfer. In fact, he died on the golf course in the company of his best friends and I often add, “while following ladies league”:-) Corbin has taken a keen interest in the sport and when visiting here for a weekend a few weeks ago, we simply had to hit the driving range – twice!

Here is his golf swing that would have, among many other things, made his great grandfather very proud!

Goodness gracious, in a short while, I am going to Niagara Falls, NY, to get together with the Honorary co-Founder of Ten Million Clicks For Peace, Gina Gaudio-Graves:-)
